In this issue we feature a new theme, one that is growing in prominence—and indeed in relevance—to our sector. The theme is social enterprise.
We in New Zealand are on the brink of embracing the challenges offered by moving from dependence on government funding and private philanthropy, to a much greater independence in terms of social innovation, social enterprise, social lending and ultimately long-term financial independence—and therefore sustainability.
So, social enterprise and social entrepreneur development will be the space to watch over the coming months and years.
NZFVWO supports developing communities so we can move away from traditional sources of funding, diversifying into more enterprise-based ones. So much so, we are looking to make an appointment in the next few weeks—a full-time permanent role within our team—to foster and grow social enterprise thinking and culture within the wider community & voluntary sector. We think it’s that important.
If it works overseas, it can and does certainly work here. The ingenuity of Kiwis so far down this road can’t go unnoticed. We feature a few NZ social enterprises that are happening now—and indeed have been for some time. Our own TechSoup NZ programme is also one such instance.
It’s all about a repositioning of our thinking and activities more toward a culture of less dependence, more innovation and enterprise.
So, this issue rekindles the thinking to advance social enterprise, with a view to inspiring action.
